البيئة هي كل ما يحيط بنا من نطاق مائي، وهوائي، أو يابسة، بجميع مكوناتها الحية وغير الحية، فالبيئة ملاذ الإنسان ومكان عيشه وممارسة نشاطاته، فإن صلُحت عاش الإنسان بسلام وصحة وإن فسدت أو اختلت عناصرها توالت على البشرية المشاكل بأنواعها، ومن أجل ذلك بُذلت الجهود وأُنشئت المؤسسات والمنظمات البيئية التي تهدف إلى حمايتها.
